Scientists in medieval times used these beautiful and enigmatic symbols in their manuscripts as a shorthand for various chemicals and processes. Although none of their works led to the discovery of the Philosopher’s Stone or the ability to create gold from a base metal, many wonderful scientific advances were made, opening the field for modern chemists.
